The Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs, also known as the Squirrel Cage Jail, is a unique and historic jail with revolving, circular, or lazy Susan, jail cells. It’s one of only three remaining squirrel cage style jails. The building was originally built on the site of a morgue for the old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and there were several deaths in the jail. There have been many reports of ghostly activity there, from sightings of a little girl dressed in gray inside one of the cells, to the feeling of tugging at people’s clothing. Paranormal Lockdown filmed here!
A supposed haunted property in a southwestern Iowa town will be featured during a supernatural television show later this week. Malvern Manor, located in Malvern, Ia., about 30 miles southeast of Council Bluffs, will appear Friday night on TLC's "Paranormal Lockdown." The Omaha World-Herald reports that the site was built in the 1880s. It was known back then as the Cottage Hotel — the town’s first hotel, according to historical records. The 10,000-square-foot hotel has gone through a number of owners, the World-Herald said. In the 20th century, it was converted into a nursing home and later a group home. Current owner and paranormal investigator Josh Heard told the World-Herald that when he first entered the house a few years ago, the experience of being inside "blew me away."
